Cities are profoundly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, whereby raising fundamental questions about sustainable and symbiotic urban development. The multidimensional nature of the pandemic has left an indelible mark on the outlook of the cities and has led to rethinking cities’ development in different dimensions – social, cultural, economic, and environmental. Being at the forefront, cities have played a central role in the global response to the ongoing pandemic.
The UNESCO Cities Platform (UCP) composed of 8 UNESCO city Networks and Programmes from all its fields of expertise – education, culture, nature and social sciences, and communication and information, have a comprehensive and transversal approach to the Organization’s work in the urban context for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In this framework, through the online meeting, UNESCO Cities Platform will bring together a diverse set of urban actors – including mayors, local policymakers, professionals and practitioners, NGOs, international institutions to support city decision-makers in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 crisis and work towards building sustainable and resilient cities of tomorrow. The meeting (PROGRAMME) will include three debates and a special session on sustainable tourism.
The debates will be structured around interconnected themes that focus on cities’ actions during the different stages of the pandemic, namely: a) cities’ immediate response to the crisis; b) early recovery in cities; and, c) building a more resilient future for cities. The special session will explore the impact of the pandemic on the tourism sector, as well as how the sector’s recovery towards sustainable tourism can also support cities’ resilience and sustainability in the post-COVID-19 period.
The meeting will be held in English and French with simultaneous interpretation in the two languages.

Le città sono profondamente colpite dalla pandemia di COVID-19, che solleva questioni fondamentali sullo sviluppo urbano sostenibile e simbiotico. La natura multidimensionale della pandemia ha lasciato un segno indelebile nelle prospettive delle città e ha portato a ripensarne lo sviluppo in diverse dimensioni: sociale, culturale, economica e ambientale. Essendo in prima linea, le città hanno svolto un ruolo centrale nella risposta globale alla pandemia in corso.
La piattaforma delle città dell’UNESCO (UCP) composta da 8 reti e programmi delle città dell’UNESCO provenienti da tutti i suoi settori di competenza – istruzione, cultura, natura e scienze sociali, comunicazione e informazione- ha un approccio globale e trasversale al lavoro dell’Organizzazione nel contesto urbano per l’attuazione dell’Agenda 2030 per lo sviluppo sostenibile.
In questo quadro, attraverso l’incontro online, la Piattaforma delle Città dell’UNESCO riunirà una serie diversificata di attori urbani – tra cui sindaci, responsabili delle politiche locali, professionisti e professionisti, ONG, istituzioni internazionali per supportare i decisori delle città nella mitigazione dell’impatto del COVID- 19 crisi e lavorare per costruire città sostenibili e resilienti di domani.
