Climate change is one of the most critical issues of our time and its impact on World Heritage properties is more evident than ever. How can Earth observation data and tools support and promote actions to improve heritage protection, particularly in urban areas?
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Centre with the Greek GEO Office is launching the new GEO Urban Heritage Climate Observatory (UHCO) Community Activity on 26 April, 12:00 – 14:00 hrs CET with an open online event. This launch event marks the official inauguration of UHCO as a new Community Activity in the GEO Work Programme, and aims to bring together experts and stakeholders from the relevant fields of climate change, Earth observation and urban heritage.
UHCO serves as a forum for partners to share practices, needs and expertise; to match user needs with Earth observation data; to enrich and coordinate monitoring, and management of urban heritage; and for communication and advocacy related to climate action. The ultimate goal is to develop a global platform to collect and integrate Earth observations and complementary data, information and relevant indicators to address the risks and impacts of climate change on urban heritage and enable appropriate adaptation measures.
The UHCO launch on 26 April is open to all interested parties and will be held in English.

Il cambiamento climatico è una delle questioni più critiche del nostro tempo e il suo impatto sui siti del Patrimonio Mondiale è più evidente che mai. In che modo i dati e gli strumenti di osservazione della Terra possono supportare e promuovere azioni per migliorare la protezione del patrimonio, in particolare nelle aree urbane?
Il Centro per il patrimonio mondiale dell’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l’educazione, la scienza e la cultura (UNESCO) con l’Ufficio greco GEO lancia una nuova attività comunitaria: su tratta del GEO Urban Heritage Climate Observatory (UHCO), che verrà presentato il 26 aprile con un open event online.
GEO Urban Heritage Climate Observatory mira a riunire esperti e parti interessate dei settori pertinenti del cambiamento climatico, dell’osservazione della Terra e del patrimonio urbano. UHCO funge da forum per i partner per condividere pratiche, esigenze e competenze; per soddisfare le esigenze degli utenti con i dati di osservazione della Terra arricchire e coordinare il monitoraggio e la gestione del patrimonio urbano; e per la comunicazione e la difesa relative all’azione per il clima. L’obiettivo finale è sviluppare una piattaforma globale per raccogliere e integrare osservazioni della Terra e dati complementari, informazioni e indicatori pertinenti per affrontare i rischi e gli impatti dei cambiamenti climatici sul patrimonio urbano e consentire misure di adattamento appropriate. Il lancio dell’UHCO il 26 aprile è aperto a tutte le parti interessate e si terrà in inglese.
