The “Technical Meeting on the Recovery of the World Heritage Site of Palmyra” took place on 18 December 2019 at UNESCO’s Headquarters, with the aim of reflecting on, and discussing the recovery of Palmyra, as a World Heritage property.
The meeting followed the latest World Heritage Committee Decisions, requesting to limit restoration works to first aid interventions until the security situation has improved, therefore allowing for detailed studies and extensive fieldwork, as well as discussions on defining optimal approaches.
The meeting, which was attended by 34 international experts, focused on issues of reconstruction and recovery of the property. At the end of the meeting, a number of recommendations were agreed upon, including the necessity of emergency interventions at specific monuments, and highlighting that plans for any reconstruction work should not be implemented in the immediate phase. A detailed assessment of the damaged structures individually, as well as the site as a whole, would need to be carried out first, while observing International charters and recommendations. Rehabilitating the site museum has been noted as a priority, integrating a holistic approach in the interpretation of all values associated with the site.

Lo scorso 18 dicembre, presso la sede dell’UNESCO, , si è tenuto il “Meeting tecnico sul recupero del sito del patrimonio mondiale di Palmira”, con l’obiettivo di riflettere e discutere sul recupero di Palmira come proprietà del patrimonio mondiale.
L’incontro ha seguito le ultime decisioni del Comitato del Patrimonio Mondiale, che chiedevano di limitare i lavori di restauro agli interventi di pronto soccorso fino a quando la situazione della sicurezza non fosse migliorata, consentendo quindi studi dettagliati e approfonditi lavori sul campo, nonché discussioni sulla definizione di approcci ottimali.
L’incontro, a cui hanno partecipato 34 esperti internazionali, si è concentrato su temi di ricostruzione e recupero della proprietà. Alla fine della riunione, sono state concordate una serie di raccomandazioni, tra cui la necessità di interventi di emergenza in specifici monumenti e sottolineando che i piani per qualsiasi lavoro di ricostruzione non dovrebbero essere attuati nella fase immediata. Una valutazione dettagliata delle strutture danneggiate individualmente, nonché del sito nel suo insieme, dovrebbe essere effettuata per prima, osservando le carte e le raccomandazioni internazionali. La riabilitazione del museo del sito è stata considerata una priorità, integrando un approccio olistico nell’interpretazione di tutti i valori associati al sito.
